I, Stephanie, will soon have been back from India for a year already. I still frequently look back on a very special and beautiful journey, on which I saw and learned so much.

Following my previous report in August I had a week off. I used this week wisely, having Hindi lessons every two days. I studied a lot and enjoyed having a rest on my roof terrace with my neighbour.

Everything is going well with my work in the project. By now all the children know that I clean teeth. They often come to see me voluntarily in their lunch break. So they’ll eat their hot lunch quickly and come to see me while they still have the last bits of food stuck to their teeth.

Two months in India. Time is flying by.

Daily life, both work and private is just like real life but at a much slower pace. Three weeks ago, I moved to a bigger room. My blood pressure is stable again and my Hindi lessons are getting better all the time.

This morning at 3.00 am Robert de Wit and Inge van Nistelrooij were already raring to go on their trip to Nijmegen. They are going to walk 50 km in the Nijmegen Four Day March especially for the Didi Foundation!

Running for Didi Running for Didi

On Sunday the 9th of June, Marlies is going to run for Didi in the Maasdijk Marathon – 10 km, alongside Wouter Krassenburg and Joris Broeksteeg. "I can’t run 10 km yet so it’s going to be a real challenge”, says Marlies. Sponsor Marlies, Wouter and Joris throughout the competition!

We wanted to organize a Didi event and the cultural centre in Oss “de Groene Engel” was kind enough to offer us their auditorium for the event on Saturday 6th of October, 2012. We were able to plan a full programme for the day in a fairly short space of time.

Marlies in India Marlies in India

Last summer, Marlies Landman, board member of the Didi Foundation, married Taco. They went on honeymoon to India. A surprising choice, but Marlies really wanted to see the place she had been working for, for the last 5 years so it was a perfect time to take a look at the children’s home.

Stephanie’s working visit to the St. Jude’s Foundling Home in Jhansi – the reason for the Didi Foundation’s existence – was once again exciting, educational, useful and most of all HOT!

It’s like a restaurant! It’s like a restaurant!

Children are still children, even in Jhansi, India. They think the new colours of the children’s home, blue and pink, are fantastic! ‘It’s like a restaurant’, the girls said, enthusiastic about the colours they’d chosen themselves.

It was during one of the first times that children’s medals were given out in Oss. It was one of the initiatives of the Dutch Socialist Party, and as chairman of the committee for Youth and Education I was able to be there.

Coming across an elephant in the street, seeing the Taj Mahal, amazed by the sheer volume of people, Stephanie’s children’s home… For Renate one of the members of the board for the Didi Foundation, it was the first time that she had ever visited her mother country of India.
